The Olmpic Games 2012 in London are of special improtance to the decathon community, because they mark the centennial of the first Olympic decathlon.
The city of Marburg and the Zehnkampf-TEAM have invited all Olympic decathlon medal winners to Marburg, to celebrate this centennial on the 20th of July with a Gala event and a party. In these one hundred years, 66 medals were won by 55 Olympic athletes. 32 of these men are still alive.
The event will take place on the 20th of July 2012 in Marburg, one week prior to the Olympic Games.
The theme of the event is:
„Familientreffen • Family Reunion“
Whenever one speaks of the decathlon, the decathlon-family is also part of the conversation. In no other sport in which individual atheletes compete, do rivals share closer bonds. The events of two days of the competition of any decathlon forge close relationships. This special relationship between the athletes shows itself in many aspects of the sport, some of which are:
- Supporting the rival during the competition
- Shared honor lap after the competition by all atheletes
- Close ties and friendships between the different generations of athletes
- True friendships among rivals
